Cost of living, climate change, the federal election and collaboration top the 2025 list of important issues according to Australian philanthropists

A survey of more than 120 Australian philanthropists found that the cost of living, climate change, the upcoming Australian federal election and how to support more and better collaboration were the big issues identified as critical in 2025.

Despite the shifting political landscape globally, many of the same issues raised in previous years’ surveys remain top priorities such as climate change, First Nations equity and the importance of policy advocacy.

“This speaks to an approach that values consistency through long-term thinking and relationships,” said Adam. “However, consistency should not be understood as a static approach – there is much evolution and momentum. How philanthropy responds to the climate crisis and how First Nations communities are best supported remains front of mind for many.”

In this year’s edition, the sector reflects deeply on its role and impact. “We find a sector that more than ever is considering how external developments, including the recent US Presidential election, global conflicts, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, will shape the context in which philanthropy operates,” said Adam Ognall, Executive Director of Partnerships and Practice at Philanthropy Australia.

The report, created through input from 120 survey respondents, identifies key themes central to philanthropic efforts moving forward. These themes point to a strong desire for deeper collaboration, shared power and a better understanding of the true impact of giving.

Philanthropy Australia’s Telescope Report serves as a call to action, encouraging the sector to embrace ideas of shared concern and work collaboratively toward more and better giving for a generous and inclusive Australia.
