Global agreement for net zero shipping by 2050
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) just committed to net zero shipping on or before 2050 at a recent UN summit. IMO countries agreed to cut shipping emissions -- estimated to contribute 3% of emissions globally -- by 20% by 2030 and 70% by 2040, compared to 2008 levels, and 100% by or around 2050. The commitment is likely to spur low and zero emissions shipping innovations including electric ships and the return of large-scale sailing vessel shipping.
