Rare pygmy blue whale calf spotted off WA coast
A pygmy blue whale calf has been spotted off Western Australia's coast by marine biologist Pia Markovich and videoed by Jo Barden. Blue whales are an endangered species, with about 1,500 believed to be in Australian waters.
Markovich, who studies blue whales, said there had only been about three well-documented sightings of blue whales with a calf along the southern coastline in the past decade. She said the population of blue whales is increasing but that it's always good to see calves. "When we see little calves like this, they could potentially live to 80 to 100 years", she said.
