The Barefoot Investor has an embarrassing confession... he waited too long to install solar!

The latest blog by Barefoot Investor’s Scott Pape has a surprising message for all – if you’ve been sceptical or reluctant to install solar in your home, you’re missing out on a 30% return on your money!

Scott writes, embarrassingly, that he’s sat twiddling his thumbs for years when he could have earned a 30% return on my money.

“Seriously,” he says, “the thought of it almost makes me want to hang up my footprints in shame.”

Scott has just had solar panels hooked up at his shearing shed, and, he says, “the only thing I can keep thinking is … why didn’t I do it earlier?”

Why? Many reasons, he said, that no doubt apply to most of us. It's all a bit boring and complicated, there are stories of cowboys and scammers ripping people off (which always happens when the government throws money at something) but, mostly, life is busy.

But, he says, after doing his homework on the savings involved, “my excuses were not only pathetic, they were also costing me money.”

Scott recommends the book, “The Good Solar Guide: 7 Steps to Tiny Bills for Australian Homeowners” by Finn Peacock. The book, he says, does a good job covering the basics of solar, and steps out how to save big bucks.

He goes on to explain how he got started, found and vetted possible providers, got quotes and kick-started his solar installation.

As Scott says, “Look, the numbers don’t lie: in most cases you’ll get a better return from installing solar than you will from most other investments. Learn from my mistakes and get your kids onto it! It’s child’s play. Hello sunshine!”
