Tiwi Islander briefing on the battle to stop Santos's gas expansion and upcoming tours to their island home
Tiwi Islanders battling to stop the massive new Santos Barossa gas project in the Timor Sea will brief supporters about their campaign and details of invitations to visit them on their beautiful island in the Northern Territory either in early May, June or mid-September. To attend the webinar on 8 April, 12:30 pm AEST, please click here.
Campaigner Antonia Burke will provide details of the recent visits to the Tiwi Islands by the CEOs of three of Australia’s Big Four banks and the ongoing effort to stop Santos’ Barossa gas project and other fossil fuel projects from going ahead in the Timor Sea.
Tiwi islanders are extending invitations to those who would like to visit their island and Ethinvest will coordinate a trip for interested clients either in early May, early June and mid-September. Antonia will outline the details of the three-day visit including the cost ($2,140 exclusive of flight to Darwin), and locations and the chance to meet with local Tiwi elders and community in this remote far north island location.

“We would like people to understand how the Barossa gas project will desecrate our cultural and spiritual connection to the sea, marine animals and the environment,” said Pirrawayingi Puruntatameri, Tiwi Islands Senior Munupi Traditional Owner of the offering to bring mainlanders to their island.
Market Forces is working with communities around Australia fighting large-scale gas projects to pressure banks and other funders to understand not just the climate implications but the impact on communities from the Tiwi Islands in the NT to the Pilliga in NSW.
